WILLEMSTAD--The political leaders of Curaçao's three coalition parties MFK, PS and MAN reached agreement on Friday to continue their cooperation and thus prevent a government crisis, at least for the time being.
Gerrit Schotte (MFK), Helmin Wiels (PS) and Charles Cooper (MAN) met at the latter's home to discuss the current tensions between their parties. They agreed to 12 priority points based on the governing accord for the Schotte-cabinet and addressed the local media together after the talks.
Cooper said political negotiations are never easy, but that they had found each other again in the end. Wiels added that the common good is greater than individual interests, while Schotte stated that the misunderstandings which led to accusations back and forth between particularly MFK and PS in- and outside of Parliament have been cleared up.
The three party leaders did not want to go into details, but had said that work is being done to realise completely free education, a major issue for PS. Doing so will require 18 million guilders per year.
Further discussions are to follow in the near future at a two-day retreat in Banda'bou.
