PHILIPSBURG--Police have captured Anguillian T.M., who robbed a tourist couple in Philipsburg on Sunday around 5:00am.
His arrest led to the arrest of four other nationals of Anguilla who were found in possession of stolen goods in a hotel.
The couple was robbed by two men at gunpoint and reported the incident immediately at the Philipsburg police station. Uniformed officers were sent out to make an intensive search of the area for the suspects, who had fled on foot.
A helpful citizen relayed information to the police that made it possible to locate one suspect, T.M., who was hiding on the Oranje School premises on Front Street. Police said the suspect had been ordered to surrender and to exit his hiding place, but instead, he had drawn his firearm. This obligated the officers to use force and T.M. was shot in his left leg.
The Anguillian was still in possession of the stolen items belonging to the tourists. The items ? cell phones, money, jewellery, cameras and other personal items ? along with the firearm were confiscated for further investigation.
The suspect was transported by ambulance to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for medical treatment. After his injured leg had been treated, T.M. was released into police custody.
Further investigation led to the apprehension of four other persons, also nationals of Anguilla, who were in possession of stolen items. The suspects and the stolen goods were found in their hotel rooms.
The Prosecutor's Office and the Detective Department are investigating the shooting and the further details of this case.
Meanwhile, the police announced in a statement Monday that intense controls would continue in the coming months.
