PHILIPSBURG--Dressed in pink aprons and using pink pens with breast cancer ribbons that lit up, five community-conscious women shed their day jobs and took up waitressing at Hard Rock Cafe St. Maarten on the Great Bay beach promenade at the end of October to raise money for Positive Foundation.
They earned more than US $900 in tips for breast cancer awareness. That, pooled with a percentage of the dinner sales and raffle tickets, made a combined donation of $1,750 for Positive Foundation.
The "Celebrity Waitress" event saw Hard Rock fill up with residents and some tourists eager to support the increase of breast cancer awareness. The "celebrity" waitresses ? Attorney Brenda Brooks, PJD2 radio personality Grace "Lady Grace" Blijden, former Miss St. Maarten Angelique Martes-Romou, journalist Alita Singh and radio personality Mercedes "Elektra" Wyatt ? had their work cut out for them.
They had to take drink and food orders and take care of the diners' needs. Keeping the diners happy was a challenging and rewarding job. Family and friends took the opportunity to keep their assigned waitresses on their toes by demanding faster service or making some impossible orders for fun.
The five "celebrity" waitresses raised more than $900 in tips, with Brooks tapping into waitressing skills learned during her studies in the Netherlands to earn the most tips.
Those tips plus 15 per cent of host Hard Rock Cafe's dinner sales for the evening were given to Positive Foundation President Shelly Alphonso. Shoring up the donation was the sale of numerous $1 raffle tickets with prizes that included stays at The Cliff and smart phones.
Alphonso was thankful for the commitment of so many people to the waitressing event and especially applauded the waitresses for their part.
Riselle Celestina of event organiser Glitter Party Planners said: "The event was well attended. All tables were full and waitresses worked their butts off." She also thanked Gary "Gee Money" Euton for donating his time as master of ceremonies for the event.
Main sponsors were Hard Rock Cafe and B and C Beverage (Corona and Tequila Rose). Other sponsors were Island 92, PJD2, Laser 101, Alo, Gojilania, Renttasound, Sound 2000 and Shop 4 Less. Raffle prizes were donated by Miguel Salon and Spa, Porto Cupecoy, The Cliff, Sonesta Great Bay Resort and Casino, and MAC among others.
Diners were entertained by Ralph and the Rivers Brothers, and Mosaic.
