COLE BAY--A midsize Isuzu flatbed truck turned over onto the Osborne Kruytoff roundabout. Despite extensive damage to the truck and its surroundings, the driver of the vehicle survived the accident with no serious injury.
A truck loaded with two tons of steel and zinc failed to reduce speed when approaching Welfare Road from A.J.C. Brouwer Road in Cole Bay on Wednesday around 1:30pm. It was not known up to press time whether the brake system was functional.
The truck made a sharp right turn when approaching the roundabout, which caused it to overturn onto its left side. It came to a halt after slamming into the roundabout's wall, taking out a concrete lamppost and a palm tree in the process.
Emergency vehicles arrived quickly and the driver was taken to St. Maarten Medical Center for observation. The Fire Department was vital in preparing the truck for recovery while police directed traffic. A Hungry's tow truck also was at the scene of the accident and was responsible for removing and transporting the truck.
The accident caused considerable delays in traffic until the road had been cleared. No other vehicles were involved in it and no one was seriously injured.
