Unions: Carnival time clashes with exams, change is needed

PHILIPSBURG--The Windward Islands Chamber of Labour Unions (WICLU) has renewed its call to government for the annual Carnival celebrations held at end of April/early May to be moved to a more suitable time in the year, to avoid disrupting students studying and sitting examinations.

WICLU President Theophilus Thompson said moving the Carnival dates would be more beneficial, considering the average results of secondary school students. "That's affecting the future of our students to accomplish the highest academic excellence."

With this in mind, the Carnival dates need "another look" and for the debate on the dates to become active again in the community.

The Carnival celebrations should be put in a more economically compatible period, so that the benefits of this cultural festival can be maximised, Thompson said, adding, "We want to make sure that our education system and our youth are not affected."

The union leader emphasised that the unions don't want Carnival to be shelved, because it is part of the country's cultural heritage. "But we must know where our priorities should be."

Tourism and Economic Affairs Minister Franklin Meyers had also signalled his agreement with moving the dates of Carnival, as he had also done as a Commissioner in the early 2000s, the union leader recalled.
