India's nuke chief rebuffs Lanka's fears over Kudankulam plant

India's nuclear energy programme chief Srikumar Banerjee has dismissed Sri Lanka's fears over the Kudankulam nuclear plant as unfounded.

Dr Banerjee in an interview to India's NDTV claimed that the plant, located in  Tamil Nadu's southern town of Kudankulam, 250 kms away from Sri Lanka's Mannar coast, has one of the world's safest reactors.
"There should be no concerns on safety. The safety analysis of the plant is complete. Kudankulam has one of the world's safest nuclear reactors," Dr. Banerjee said.

The nuclear programme chief said India had already inked an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) convention that provided a frame work for addressing trans-boundary concerns if an accident happens. India's nuclear liability law also addresses these concerns.

Dr. Banerjee's response came following concerns raised by Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka early this week over possible radiation threat from Kudankulam nuclear reactors.

Mr. Ranawaka warned that Sri Lanka would raise the issue with the IAEA  in September -- a move which a section of the Indian media, including the NDTV interpreted, as an attempt to get back at India for its recent vote against Lanka on a UN resolution that stressed the need for the island to fix accountability for human rights violations and alleged war crimes.
The multi-billion dollar plant, India's largest, being built with the help of the Russians, will see two reactors being commissioned within months of each other.
