Duncan favours bikes for police

PHILIPSBURG--More police on bicycles and motorbikes may soon be seen as Justice Minister Roland Duncan pursues his plans to "really put more 'blue' on the streets" by favouring those modes of transports more than cars.

Questioned by Members of Parliament (MPs) about the police mobility plan for which NAf. 1 million have been allocated in the 2012 budget, Duncan said he is in no way against the police using cars. However, officers locked in a car with windows up and air conditioner on do not sufficiently bring them in more contact with the people.

The use of bicycles and motorbikes also fits with plans to open more substations in the districts and for the development of a community police unit, for which some five officers have already been appointed.

The Minister explained that those modes of transportation would be more suitable for some of the hilly and difficult access sections of areas where substations will be placed.

He also wants police officers to walk more in the districts and do beach patrols, which would be carried out better with bikes and Segways, the two-wheeled, self-balancing vehicles. The police already have Segways, but these are not being used.

Duncan said that the argument that a car is needed to hold a suspect when caught is not viable, because police officers, whether on foot or bikes, would have the same means of arresting a suspect and can radio in for a car for a pick up.
