Broad Parliamentary support for supervision of St. Maarten

THE HAGUE--A majority in the Dutch Parliament's Second Chamber sees no other option for St. Maarten's budgetary woes than intervention by the Kingdom government.

The liberal democratic VVD party, Socialist Party (SP), Labour Party PvdA, Party for Freedom PVV and Christian Democratic Party CDA are fed up with St. Maarten's attitude in the negotiations with the Committee for Financial Supervision CFT to come to a balanced budget. Together these five largest parties represent 121 of the 150 seats in Parliament.

The Hague sees the decision by St. Maarten's government not to show up for a conference call with the CFT earlier this week as provocation and political unwillingness to solve the issue in an amicable way.

"Not done," said Member of Parliament (MP) Bas Jan van Bochove (CDA). "Childish," responded MP Ronald van Raak (SP). "A disgusting performance," reacted colleague Eric Lucassen (PVV). Andre Bosman (VVD) and Martijn van Dam (PvdA) were milder: they both called it "a pity."

The Second Chamber's Permanent Committee for Kingdom Relations decided during a meeting on Wednesday to increase pressure on Dutch Minister of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner. The Committee wants a letter from the minister no later than next week Tuesday detailing the steps he will take to end the budget crisis in St. Maarten.

Indications are that the Committee will request a debate in Parliament with the minister after it has received the letter. A possible motion requesting the Kingdom Council of Ministers to intervene in St. Maarten based on the guarantee function Article 43 of the Kingdom Charter will receive the support of the vast majority in Parliament.

The Kingdom Council of Ministers will discuss on Friday, April 1, CFT's advice to the Kingdom government to issue an instruction forcing St. Maarten to provide information on the finances of government and government-owned companies.
