Dutch marines assist police by combing murder scenes

PHILIPSBURG--Twenty marines of Dutch navy ship HLMS Rotterdam were deployed in St. Maarten on Tuesday to search the scenes of the recent murder cases that have shocked the St. Maarten community.

A police press release Tuesday said Dutch Marines on HMS Rotterdam were deployed in the area of Alexis Arnell Road, better known as the road behind Cake House, and Chopin Road, the dirt road behind Learning Unlimited.

"The search started this (Tuesday) morning at approximately 8:30am supervised by members of the St. Maarten Police Force. Hopefully, finding possible clues can help to solve the crimes that have taken place," the police explained Tuesday.

The marines operated in what the police press release referred to as "a so-called 'line formation'" during the exercise, in search of possible evidence. There was no indication from the police at the end of the day about whether any evidence or items of interest had been found

The Navy's assistance reportedly was requested and subsequently authorised by Governor Eugene Holiday, acting on a request for assistance by the Prosecutor's Office to help comb the crime scenes to establish whether any evidence might have been thrown into the bushes in the areas.

While the request was considered exceptional, the HMS Rotterdam is in St. Maarten on a routine visit and the marines who were readily available offered their support.

Assisting civil authorities is one of the main tasks of the Navy in the Caribbean and the military most recently gave assistance during Hurricane Earl in 2010.
