PHILIPSBURG--The police on Tuesday arrested a number of persons on grounds of electricity theft including a co-owner of a local supermarket at his home. No further details were available by press time from law enforcement.
The arrests were part of an ongoing operation by law enforcement to crack down on electricity which, when translated into dollars and cents, is said to tally up to significant amounts. A number of arrests have already been made over the past few weeks.
The crackdown on electricity theft is a collaborative effort between law enforcement, GEBE and the Ministry of VROMI. Efforts to obtain information from GEBE regarding the amount of electricity theft experienced annually were not successful on Tuesday.
The persons arrested on Tuesday were reportedly stealing electricity for about a year.
