~ PJIA is "Blue Flag Business" of the month ~
AIRPORT--Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA), the "Blue Flag Business" for April, is encouraging the hundreds of residents expected to flock to the island's beaches this weekend to keep the beaches litter-free.
PJIA said it had placed a number of garbage bins at the popular Mullet Bay Beach earlier this week and it would like to encourage everyone "to keep the environment, especially the beaches, litter-free."
"Princess Juliana International Airport is encouraging the general public in St. Maarten/St. Martin to keep the island clean during the holidays" and throughout the year, a PJIA press release quoted PJIA Marketing and Communications Department Acting Manager Kalifa Hickinson as saying.
Her appeal was made on the eve of the Easter weekend, which traditionally is the busiest period of the year for the island's beaches as residents flock to them for fun, relaxation, family picnicking and traditional sea baths.
"We are urging everyone to put their trash articles in the bins at the various beaches during the Easter season" and throughout the year, said Hickinson, adding, "PJIA has taken the liberty to place garbage bins on the Mullet Bay Beach to assist the organizers and environmentalists, Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) and the St. Maarten Tourist Bureau with the initiative."
The Blue Flag programme is a prestigious international eco-label for beaches, marinas and tourism destinations. Through the Blue Flag programme St. Maarten is among some 40 Blue Flag destinations around the world.
The eco-label is recognised as a symbol of quality by governments, NGOs and the travel industry. It is also used to promote the awarded beaches, marinas, hotels and destinations.

According to the Fire Department/Office of Disaster Management (ODM) the heavy rainfall watch issued by the Meteorological Department of Curaçao (MDC) Thursday afternoon will continue until 6:00pm today.
There already was some localised flooding last night and several roads in low-lying areas were closed as a public safety measure. This, together with concerns about flooded streets, debris on public roads, cleanup efforts that need to get underway, and the potential and uncertainty for more rain, prompted the Prime Minister's announcement that schools will remain closed today
The Met Department advised residents to be cautious and to prepare for possible flooding in low-lying areas, street flooding and rock falls due to persistent heavy rainfall. Residents also have been advised to avoid A.Th. Illidge Road, L.B. Scott Road; Zagersgut Road and Welgelegen Road, as these are in flood-prone areas.
"If you do not have to be on the road, remain at home. If you have to go to work, wait until the heavy rainfall subsides, and drive cautiously."
The MDC Special Bulletin was issued on Thursday at 5:30pm. A heavy rainfall watch is issued when heavy rainfall is evident within a certain timeframe. The watch also could be upgraded to an advisory or warning if conditions warrant this.
The department also has advised that in the event of lightning strikes, residents should switch off and disconnect all sensitive electronic equipment, telephones and computers.
The Fire Department/ODM and the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Development, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI were expected to conduct preliminary assessments of the various districts throughout Thursday night.
Also, thorough assessments of the public schools will be carried out today.

Saudi Arabia's bourse ended at a three-week low as petrochemical and banking shares weighed following a drop in oil prices and global stocks.
The index of the largest Arab stock market fell 1.3 per cent to its lowest close since April 16. The petrochemical sector benchmark dropped 1.5pc and the banking index declined 1.4pc.

~ After being denied voluntary leave ~
PHILIPSBURG--Employees who were denied "voluntary leave" by the TelEm Group of Companies reportedly are not taking the company's decision lightly and will seek legal advice on how to proceed.
The company announced over the weekend that "voluntary leave" had been granted to 15 personnel, while five had been denied the leave.
The TelEm Group's offer of "voluntary leave" is in keeping with its bid to "right-size" itself. The exercise is expected to entail some downsizing of staff, with those who opt to leave voluntarily being offered what are referred to in some countries as "voluntary separation packages."
Speaking on condition that they not be identified, two of the five persons denied voluntary leave told this newspaper they could not understand why TelEm would offer the option of voluntary leave and then deny them when they took the option.
They said they had been informed that possibilities existed in the much-talked-about new operating company of TelEm, but that this was no guarantee, as the company had not been set up as yet and its structure had not been not clearly defined. They were of the opinion that the company probably believed it would be more cost-effective to keep them on board rather than pay them out for years of service.
"Why would you want to keep someone who wants to go, after you offered the opportunity?" one employee asked, adding that it was discriminatory to allow some employees to leave the company and deny others.
St. Maarten Communications Union (SMCU) President Ludson Evers could not offer informed comment on Monday, only stating that he understood legal advice would be sought. He said he had not spoken to management as yet about the denied voluntary leave.
Attempts to obtain comments from TelEm management through the company's Public Relations arm proved unsuccessful on Monday.

This cooperation agreement will regulate, among other things, the provision of specialists by the two university hospitals in The Netherlands, VUMC and AMC, to SMMC to service the patients of St. Maarten, Saba and Statia. The signing of this agreement was hailed as an important step in further developing continued quality care.
Fundashon Mariadal General Manager Giovanni Frans lauded the fact that the countries of the Dutch Kingdom would be working together to improve quality of care. He said a final agreement would be worked out over the next three months.
He dubbed the signing as a “historic moment” after the dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles that creates a new structure to provide hospital care on the islands. He said cooperation was important considering the small size of the islands.
Minister Schippers was present, but did not make any comment during the signing. St. Maarten’s Minister of Public Health Cornelius De Weever also was present.

Clashes Wednesday in Cairo between supporters and opponents of the ruling military junta left five people dead and 50 wounded. This came after gunmen attacked a rally against the ruling military junta near the Defense Ministry in Cairo, said medical sources and security services officials.
The attack occurred at dawn and provoked violent clashes between the unidentified attackers and protesters gathered for several days to demand the departure of military power. Both sides were using Molotov cocktails and stones.
